If it helps, I understand completely how you can claim a cost basis
of $21 for your shares, assuming you are not counting the profit you
made when you sold at approx. 23.5 before you bought back at 24. If you
are just adding the 50 cent difference to your original cost basis.

I really don't see why anyone really cares though, one way or the other.
