Cable vs. ADSL

Some important points to consider:
1. It'll takes years before cable co's install their nationwide Two-Way cable network. I believe that two-way installation is only around 8%. Even assuming that the installation number doubles every year (billions will have to be spent on wiring infrastructure), it'll be a long time before cable's costs come down and access is reliable. ADSL uses existing copper infrastructure.

2. Cable is a "shared" medium. Sure, cable is 10-20x faster than ADSL, but wait till other people try to access the Internet. If you have other people on the cable system, speeds can drop by a factor of 10 or more. I'm not sure about how this occurs, but I think it's because the cable backbone (not the individual wire to you house) is slowed proportionately by the number of people on it.

3. I've read that cable has several technical difficulties that haven't been worked out. It was in the George Gilder article in March's Wired, I think.

Undoubtedly, cable is the future. But it's a long way off. Maximum ADSL data transfer speeds can be increased, also.
I'm a little fuzzy on the cable/ADSL debate. Any comments to set me straight would be appreciated.

P.S. - Anyone know any two-way cable equipment stocks? Is Ortel (ORTL) one such stock?
