From Watkins-Johnson, in Electronic News:

Currently, Mr. Brady is predicting that the industry will make a comeback sometime in 1999. He said he expects a soft upswing in orders in 1Q99 and conceivably a significant upswing in revenues by 4Q99. "That's not just me," he said, adding that that was the consensus at this year's SEMI/Sematech conference. "So, probably another four quarters of real tight budgets."

Mr. Brady said both the company and industry analysts failed to see the current downturn coming. "If you look at Watkins-Johnson as a corporation, it was poised to take full advantage of what we thought would be the upturn of the semiconductor equipment industry in 1998," Mr. Brady said. "Unfortunately, that's not where we are going for this year. But we are extremely well-positioned to weather this rather violent storm, and we are planning on taking advantage of the market upturn which we believe will happen probably sometime in the second half of 1999."
