Hello Fred:

HSBC took rather large provisions for possible loan losses at year
end 1997. IMO, they have consistently run a sound, conservative
shop. This move is in keeping with that practice. Still, Shareholders
equity increased to US$27.08 Billion.

At year end they had a total capital ratio of 14.2%
and tier 1 capital of 9.3% . The message from the Chairman in the annual report is titled "Satisfactory Results". Sir William was almost apologetic about last year's 20% ROE.

I've owned it since 1985, and I've been more than pleased with
HSBC's results. And, with 5,500 banks in 79 countries, I can go
just about anywhere on Earth & cash a check. 8-)

Pardon my unbridled exuberance. I am totally biased on this Company.
They have done nothing but treat shareholder's splendidly, IMO.

Best Regards,

Doug
