John: AOL has "Instant Messenger", which is free and can be used by any other ISP user (as far as I know), and that includes Prodigy. I use IM frequently to communicate one-on-one with family in other states. I don't use AOL (thank goodness!)

I don't understand why ICQ wouldn't work with AOL or Prodigy. It runs as a separate window session, and is also free. What happens when AOL or Prodigy users try to use it? I use ICQ frequently for multi-person chats with folks I share hobbies with.

I do communicate with some folks on MacIntosh computers. The ICQ version that was ported to support them isn't as robust as the WinTel version. Perhaps miribilis is enhancing it. Perhaps not.

There is also a program called "Pow-Wow" which is free and has similar functionality to ICQ. I used it for a while, but ICQ came along and had all the fancy directory functionality, so I and my Pow-Wow friends switched over.

In my opinion, any tool(ette) that comes along in this particular market is going to face a very tough battle to gain any kind of market share. Particularly if you have to pay for the same, or similar functionality you can get for free.

Regards,
