Re: Abomination of Desolation
FWIW, others' thoughts:

Ever since I began studying prophecy, I have read and assumed that the "Abomination" meant the anti-christ will march into the rebuilt jewish temple and declare that he is god and to be worshipped. The mark of the beast on the forehead or wrist would follow this event soon thereafter. I thought Antiochus Epiphanes was a "type" for this event to happen again. Lately, I have been reading other thoughts about this event.
Now, Jesus, in Matt 24:15 says very emphatically, "So when you see standing in the holy place, the abomination of desolation spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand--then let the those in Judea to flee to the mountains." It seems to me that we (christians) will be here to see this (no rapture yet) and that this event will be a one-time visible event for all to witness. (Like the a/c marching into a temple).

I have heard people say that the abomination was when the Muslims took Jerusalem and built their mosque on the temple mount. I read where the ruler of Israel at the time even said those exact word "It is the abomination that causes desolation."

Yes, we read that there have been a number of Abominations that have taken place in the Temple and that there have been a number of antichrists in history. Some of these are foreshadows or archetypes. However, that does not negate the fact that there is a final abomination of desolation and a final antiChrist that will draw history to a close. The King is coming, and He will vanquish His enemies! #4
So .. The Jews that are here will see this covenant confirmed with the Antichrist, they will start their sacrifices in the Temple OR a tabernacle .. this does NOT have to be a "temple" yet. ANyway, 3.5 years into it the Antichrist will defile the holies by setting up his image to worship.

Technically, there only has to be an altar -- not even a Tabernacle. The altar is good enough to call the "holy place." In fact, I believe the original language omits the word place -- ". . . standing in the holy . . . ." The term abomination usually refers to an idol.

It is abominations meaning more than one. It is on the wing of these abominations that one will come that will bring destruction until Jesus comes to end it. One interpretation says on the wing of the abominal temples one will come.:)

That is a nice story about only the Jews watching the events surrounding the Abomination of Desolation, but it doesn't square with Scripture. A good rule of thumb for reading and understanding prophecy is making sure that ALL interpretations square with ALL Scripture. So if you are going to interpret the events surrounding the A of D, then you need to look at all the passages.
In your interpretation of Matthew 24, where Jesus actually refers back to Daniel's prophecy, you leave out another important passage regarding the SAME abomination of desolation, namely 2 Thess 2. The interesting thing about 2 Thess 2 is that the Abomination of Desolation is BEFORE the "gathering", and Paul is talking specifically to a body of believers, a mixture of Jews and Greeks. So I just don't see how you can say that only the Jews will see the A of D, and that the Church will be raptured before at least this mid-way point.

I believe your view is that the abomonation happened when the mosque (sp?) was set up.
That whole portion of Matt 24:15 thru 21 makes me think it is not a period of years, but a short period. You do believe that the great tribulation is 3 1/2 years, don't you? Something is going to happen real fast when the abomonation of desolation happens. One passage says "Remember Lots wife?", meaning they won't have much time to get out of there. It says not to go back into the house, etc. No, that passage is talking about a specific day they had better flee to the mountains in a hurry, and hope they aren't pregnant, or hope it is not on a Sabbath, as they can't travel only a short distance on the sabbath. Maybe the Mosque was a fore runner of the abomonation.

Maybe the Mosque was a fore runner of the abomonation.<<
I think it is but then it is hard to tell where one brakes off and the other begins. What you quoted about fleaing to Judea and such did happen back then. When the Islamic armies were seen coming in such large force many ran into the hills of Judea and then the Islamic armies surrounded Jerusalem and laid siege. The people there just gave up knowing they didn't have a chance. But desolations were at hand because the Islamics took over Israel from there, killing and destroying. When the Dome was built it was said by the christians at the time that it was the abomination standing in the Holy Place. It is because of this invasion that the Jews had no homeland to return to for over a thousnad years. The same abomination stands on the Holy Mount now, declaring Allah god. The same Islamic forces that are against them and want Jerusalm as there capital. It is because of this fight over Jerusalem that the war that will end all wars will begin. But I do believe that there is a leader and we call him the antchrist. He will be the one to launch the attack and then somehow hold the world hostage through his actions. Will this last 3 1/2 years? I don't think so. It could be 1 year or 5 mons, who knows. As you know I don't quite read that verse about the 7 years like most do. I believe the actions taken during that time will ultimatly cause the one to come that will bring a complete destruction (antichrist). So there is no telling when he will come or how long it will last. Satan has 42 mons to make it happen and try to win over God. But he has to get the people to do what he wants them to do and this could use up some of that time because of mans free will factor. Or is this 42 mons like the time, times and a half time and really means 1,260 years? I don't know. :) I'm just going to make sure that I have put on the armor that the Lord provides and be ready for anything. |
