HMOs May Be Guilty of Gender Bias

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- The American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists is taking the position
that health insurers who cover the impotence drug
Viagra but don't pay for female contraception are guilty
of ''gender bias,'' USA Today reports.

''Pregnancy is a medical condition, just like
impotence,'' Luella Klein of Emory University, a
spokeswoman for the organization, told the paper.
''And the cost benefit of preventing pregnancy is much
greater than treating impotence.''

An early industry study found that insurance companies
are reimbursing about half of the men getting
prescriptions for the new pill, a lower rate than for
other drugs.

At least 10 states cover the pill for men who qualify for
Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance program
for the poor. But at least 12 states have refused to
cover it.

USA Today reported that many employer-sponsored
plans that will not pay for women's birth control are
covering Viagra.

It said the obstetricians and gynecologists group is
issuing a statement at its convention in New Orleans
putting the organization on record backing laws to force
insurers that offer prescription drug benefits to cover
birth control.

The paper said national surveys suggestion that about
90 percent of health maintenance organizations but
only half of fee-for-service health plans cover reversible
female birth control.

It quoted pharmacy benefits consultant Mary Sevon as
saying most plans offered through insurance firms or
HMOs have decided to cover Viagra or are leaning in
that direction.
