Spring run off measures successful

Tue 12 May 98 News Release
Mr. Graham Dickson reports
Recent instrumentation installation work (thermistors and piezometers)
carried out at the Mt. Nansen facility allowed for outside engineers to
inspect the interior and the foundations of the tailings dam. From these
inspections it was clear that the integrity of the dam had not been
compromised, by thawing of the permafrost foundations. In fact extension of
the permafrost into the dam itself was noted at various locations.
Various measures taken to reduce spring run off into the tailings
impoundment have been successful. It is clear that with more than 90 per
cent of the spring run off having occurred the tailings impoundment will
have the capacity to allow operations to continue without any danger of
excess water flowing out of the spillway.
Other measures to allow even greater protection of the impoundment
throughout the year are in the permitting stage.
Substantial changes to the water treatment plant's equipment and operations
have resulted in its ability to produce an effluent that is an order of
magnitude lower in regulated pollutants than that required by the water
licence. The last two fish bio assay tests were passed successfully.
BYG is continuing to operate its water treatment plant in such a manner as
to continually upgrade its performance. BYG will produce an operational
manual and full description of the minimum processes and performances
required in order to achieve the certainty of meeting the more stringent
effluent guidelines of the nineties.
