Hitachi Data Systems Introduces Nucleus Exploration DB2 Accelerator
Delivers Fast and Economical Data Exploration in DB2 Database Environments
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1998--Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) today announced the Nucleus Exploration DB2 Accelerator, designed to give DB2 data warehouse users the ability to execute ''ad-hoc'' queries quickly and economically, without disrupting normal data warehouse operations. The DB2 Accelerator typically pays for itself on the basis of host-level hardware and software savings, requires no additional administration resources, and results in dramatic increases in productivity to the entire warehouse user community.
Running a typical DB2 workload's most resource-intensive queries on Nucleus can reduce the amount of mainframe system cycles used by up to 95 percent, greatly improving response time for DB2 end users. The system will be demonstrated at the International DB2 Users Group (IDUG) Conference, held in San Francisco, California, May 10-14, 1998.
The DB2 Accelerator is initially available for use on any OS/390-based mainframe running DB2 decision support systems. It allows ''power'' users to ask complex queries intended to analyze unusual and potentially valuable relationships in their data. These types of queries no longer have to be blocked or deferred for off-hour processing because the DB2 Accelerator can handle them without consuming large amounts of mainframe processor time, memory or disk storage.
By routing complex queries to a Nucleus Exploration Series system, the performance of the existing DB2 warehouse will be further enhanced by allowing it to focus on what it does best -- day-to-day ''production'' queries such as generating daily sales reports.
''Enterprises running the Nucleus product suite will benefit by creating increased marketing intelligence, enabling them to build new business opportunities, respond to competitive marketing activities in real-time, and ultimately, grow their business based on greater knowledge,'' said Claudia Imhoff, president of Intelligent Solutions, Inc. ''Now, by plugging Nucleus into their DB2 warehouses, these businesses will improve the responsiveness of their day-to-day transactions, while at the same time increasing the productivity of their power analysts.''
The DB2 Accelerator requires much less additional disk storage capacity than would be expected by data warehouses using conventional technology. It also provides enterprises with the potential to defer expensive processor upgrades and lower overall software licensing costs.
''The DB2 Accelerator will allow customers to see the hidden value in their corporate databases,'' said Jerry Shattner, president of HDS Canada. ''The Accelerator offers the potential for reductions in resource usage, which can lead to hardware and software savings, and best of all, it will immediately begin delivering business intelligence that leads to a competitive advantage.''
DB2 Accelerator Components and Product Availability
The Nucleus Exploration DB2 Accelerator consists of three components. The first, a Professional Services offering called Hitachi Enterprise Resource Optimization (HERO), assesses the DB2 warehouse to determine the potential benefits of acceleration. The HERO service is available now from HDS.
The second, HiDB Pace, is a software package, initially to be available for MVS/DB2, which ''mirrors'' the pertinent warehouse data on a Nucleus Exploration Series system. The Nucleus Exploration DB2 Accelerator HiDB Pace product will be available in September 1998.
The third component is the Nucleus Exploration Series system, which provides transparent query capability to the DB2 user. The system offers a unique ability for the rapid, resource-free deployment of critical decision support systems using Sand Technology's Nucleus Exploration and Nucleus Prototype products.
Packaged by Hitachi Data Systems as a series of intelligent storage systems, the Nucleus Exploration Series provides a time- and cost-saving integration of hardware, software and support services to get this revolutionary approach to data mining installed and into ''glass-house'' levels of production in the shortest possible time. The Nucleus Exploration Series of products is available now on selected NT and UNIX platforms.
Pricing of the Nucleus Exploration DB2 Accelerator varies with the size of Nucleus Exploration Series specifications required.
