Xybernaut Corporation Introduces webAssist(TM) to Surf the Web by Voice
FAIRFAX, Va., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Xybernaut Corporation (Nasdaq: XYBR), a leading provider of wearable computer hardware and knowledge management software, today introduced webAssist(TM), a software product that allows users to navigate content on the World Wide Web and Intranets by voice. webAssist(TM) is completely speaker independent. Users do not train the speech engine to recognize their voices -- webAssist(TM) automatically responds to user input immediately upon installation.
Edward G. Newman, President of Xybernaut commented that, "While most other voice recognition software simply activates commands such as 'open file,' webAssist(TM) goes several steps further and allows users to navigate through content on the Web, create and customize bookmarks for favorite sites, and execute common activities such as printing and saving, all by voice. These features give people hands-free access to information on the Web and Intranets, whether at home, in their office or in the field using our Mobile Assistant(R) wearable computer. We expect that webAssist(TM) will be well received by corporate Intranet users, the disabled community, the mobile work force and especially by home PC users."
webAssist(TM) is the first commercial product to use advanced voice recognition technology licensed from Texas Instruments. A key innovation introduced by webAssist(TM) and enabled by TI's technology is the creation of word pronunciations "on-the-fly" for Internet hyperlinks, an advantage over other voice recognition products which have a predefined vocabulary.
Dr. Mark Bergman, a noted industry analyst who consults with Xybernaut on strategic positioning, adds, "This Xybernaut-Texas Instrument effort features an extremely robust engine that is ideal for both wearable computing and conventional PC applications. As more and more companies put their documentation on Intranets to leverage the power of the Web, truly mobile, hands-free field access to mission-critical information is a compelling productivity feature."
Other features of webAssist(TM) include: voice-addressable pop-ups; recognition for common variations in the way numbers are spoken; verbal spelling options for acronyms and upper case words; and the ability to program speech recognition into Java(TM) applets. In addition, webAssist(TM) has been designed to serve as a fully integrated speech engine for linkAssist(TM), Xybernaut's speech-ready software that allows access to information stored in most formats regardless of the location of that information and without disturbing that information in any way.
Xybernaut Corporation is a leader in providing integrated hardware, software and service solutions to the emerging wearable computing industry. Xybernaut's Mobile Assistant(R) series of patented wearable computer systems feature portability, speech-activation and head-mounted displays that allow users hands-free access to information in the computer's internal storage, in local area networks, and on the Internet on an as-needed, where-needed basis.
