I have another admission to make: I was also a mainframer once upon a time. I've done my share of COBOL and PL/I (remember that?), although I have expunged all mention of either from my current resume.

Remember the IBM 029 keypunch machine? I called it the "Ah, Sh*t" machine. I'd type in a couple of letters, realize I had made a mistake, hit the card eject lever and say "Ah, Sh*t". Repeat 355 times per day.

Back in my college days, we had to submit our jobs on card decks and wait for hours to get our stuff back. Student jobs ran at the *lowest* priority. The wait could turn into days around finals. I had my own set of "Pink Cards", which I would occasionally slip in place of the officially-sanctioned Pink JCL cards supplied by the college. Getting caught using unauthorized JCL was to receive an "F" for the course, though. My justification was that if I didn't get the job turned into my prof in time, I was going to get an "F" anyway.
