When my son was in high school we went to buy some cashew nuts that were sold by the pound. He asked the young lady behind the counter for 1/4 pound of nuts. She said her cash register was broken. He said "So? " She said "I can only sell a pound or a half pound, see the price is on the nuts for those. My son said "All you have to do is take the price for the half pound and put that in half". She looked like he was speaking a foreign language. He had to do it for her.
Calculators are nice but in elementary school children should still be taught without computers or calculators and they should be memorizing one digit basic processes. But it isnt "exciting" enough and they arent "motivated" enough and they may lose "self esteem" if they do that.
