David: The following URL links to a story addressing the
overall risk to consumers of imported foodstuffs. While
the report does not specifically address the allegations
of willful Mexican coliform contamination of U.S.A.
bound produce, it is, perhaps, even more disturbing given
its broader implications and the following reported facts:

1) "more than 1/3 of all fresh fruit and 12% of vegetables
consumed in America" are of overseas origin.

2) "..only 46,395, or 1.7 percent, of more than 2.7 million
imported food shipments in 1997 were actually checked by
an inspector. Of those, only 16,000 underwent a laboratory
analysis for disease-causing organisms or other problems."
