Hi Joe..It seems that ComputerWorld has something against Novell
---------------------------------- ComputerWorld IntranetWare gets cool reception Laura DiDio 11/11/96
From the article: In the two months since Novell, Inc.'s glitzy introduction of IntranetWare at Networld/Interop '96 in Atlanta, users' response has been tepid at best.

**Comment** Is Novell marketing campaign going nowhere? ---------------------------------- ComputerWorld Fine for initiated... Garrett Michael Hayes 11/11/96 From the article:
Novell, Inc. has assembled an attractive bundle of optional and previously independent features and packaged them under the name IntranetWare. Unfortunately, it's still a bundle rather than a truly integrated package.

---------------------------------- NetworkWorld IBM/Novell ready revised LAN-to-host gateway tool By Michael Cooney and Christine Burns 10/28/96
From the article: With Version 2.2, IBM and Novell will go a long way toward making NetWare for SAA more affordable and flexible, according to documents obtained by Network World. NetworkWorld Novell and IBM ship NetWare for SAA upgrade By Christine Burns 11/04/96
From the article: Cindy Borovich, a research manager with International Data Corp. in Framingham, Mass., said NDS integration and the new pricing model are critical features that will help IBM and Novell fight off the threat of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT-based SNA Server gateway, particularly in larger installations. 'NDS support gives an administrator a central place to grant users access to multiple gateways, which saves time and money,' Borovich said. Under the current version of NetWare for SAA, user access must be defined manually at each gateway.
Native NDS support for SNA Server is expected early next year and is already sold on a per-user basis.
**Comment** It appears that IBM and NOVL are doing a good job "together".
NetworkWorld Next Windows releases up in the air By Dave Kearns 11/04/96
From the article: In documents I've seen, however, the phrase 'Trust Relationships' is still used, reminiscent of Microsoft's maligned Domain system. Whether this will be too little (not scalable for the enterprise), too late (long after Novell's NDS for NT and Banyan's StreetTalk for NT) or both remains to be seen.

---------------------------------- 5. Management Follies -- Novell and Fresh NetSoft make widely different solutions COMMUNICATIONSWEEK November 11, 1996
From the article: It's a complex job to manage complex networks, and that's why it's important to have products that do a lot to simplify things. We looked at two solutions that might have been complementary. One, Novell's respected ManageWise in its new version 2.1, and the other, a new desktop management suite, Node Vision Pro from Fresh NetSoft Inc., Mesa, Ariz. Both products promise a lot, but unfortunately only the Novell manager actually delivers.
8. You Are Here -- New developments in directory services have managers wondering COMMUNICATIONSWEEK November 11, 1996
From the article: Novell is leveraging the Novell Directory Services (NDS) platform as the enterprise directory rather than having it so closely tied to NetWare. In so doing, it would adopt multiple industry protocols, making it accessible to a variety of products and applications. In upcoming versions of NDS, Novell says it plans to support HTTP, Kerberos and LDAP, and is planning on supporting Dynamic Host Configuration Protocols by mid-1997.
Recent reports of Novell's pending deals to license NDS to Sun Microsystems and IBM to run atop their Unix operating systems highlight the vendor's eagerness to extend NDS to the enterprise. Such developments have caught the eye of IS managers such as Tony Neal, a Bethesda, Md.-based manager of research planning and deployment of LAN services with Marriott International Inc.
Neal says he "was very excited" when he read about Novell's pending licensing arrangement. "I was very pleased. I've been waiting for IBM to support NDS for more than two years now," he says, citing Marriott's desire to use directory services more extensively across its environment on all platforms, including those from IBM.
Neal manages computing resources that include 18 NetWare 4.1 servers with approximately 1,500 users, and another 1,500 that are being converted from NetWare 3.x servers. He sees Novell's announced support of LDAP as "another piece of the protocol puzzle that will tie everything together, with NDS as the real engine underneath."
9. Managing NT Via NDS -- Workstation Manager eases integration INFORMATIONWEEK November 11, 1996
From the article: "Our customers have wanted this technology for some time," says Cary Pittard, a product manager at Novell's Internet products division. "This is a key story because so many people have NT workstations. What this product allows you to do is to avoid installing, and having to manage, NT domains."
Joel House, IS director of Louis London Inc., an advertising agency and large NetWare user in St. Louis, says his company is evaluating NT Workstation as a possible upgrade path from Windows for Workgroups. If the company goes with NT Workstation, Workstation Manager "would be fantastic," House says. "We're a NetWare shop, and we don't want to be an NT server shop. Anything Novell can do to better integrate NetWare and NT clients is a benefit to us." But Novell still has no product to synchronize NT with NDS; it's developing technology, code-named Tabasco, to do so.
Novell has speeded up product delivery in recent months, partly to revive its position as a major enterprise player. A new management team, led by president Joe Marengi, promoted after CEO Bob Frankenberg's departure in late August, is driving this aggressiveness.
**Comment** I like the perception that Novell is speeding up product delivery and Marengi is driving this "aggressiveness".
14. NetWare for SAA Is Upgraded COMMUNICATIONSWEEK November 11, 1996
From the article: Several third-party vendors pledged their support. "The thing we're most enthused about is the use of NDS," said Mark Leff, director of strategic alliances for Micro Tempus Corp., Montreal. "It's a very important piece of the enterprise." The company hopes to synchronize its own set of directory services with NDS, he said.
26. NetWare Site Licensing On The Horizon COMMUNICATIONSWEEK November 11, 1996
From the article In a move that promises to reduce costs and simplify purchasing, Novell is likely to price its next major release of NetWare on a per-user basis.
Site licenses have been available for the largest customers of NetWare. But while Novell said it might extend that pricing scheme to all its customers, it did not discuss a date until last week.
