Not really arguing with your point(s) but would point out that Chiquita (originally United Fruit Company?) moved bananas from commodity products to branded products.

Having that brand advantage is not the same protection as, say, a patent but it *does* confer a marketing advantage in many cases.

In my evaluation, TSIS is a relatively low-tech business. Yes, they use T-1 lines and Interactive Voice Response ... but compared with some of the biotech companies and even some of the laboratory instrumentation companies also located in the San Diego area, TSIS is decidedly low tech.

It is this very low-techedness which permits them to have such high margins.

So what *do* they have going for them? Firstest. Maybe Largest? Assembly value. Client list, hopefully *satisfied* clients.

Disclosure: I am long in TSIS.
