To all:

I wasn't able to reach anyone at LRC (Lewis Research Center) yet. But I have a lead for tomorrow.

I looked at the engine on the web. It has the same shape that would be required for a scroll engine: cylindrical. It may very well be such an engine.

When I worked at Ford, we were developing (it was top secret at the time) an adiabatic engine. This engine would have no coolant or oil. The bearings were silicon carbide instead of steel. The idea was to minimize any heat loss to the external environment, thereby maximizing the thermodynamic efficiency of the Otto-Cycle loop. It was a failure. I think they spent tens of millions of dollars on the engine.

This kind of thing goes on all the time at the automakers. Engine research is always a top priority. And they hate to pay royalties of any kind. They work hard to get around this. Unless someone has a basic patent that is fundamental, they will redesign the apparatus enough to eliminate the need to pay anyone else. And they are always looking for suppliers that can manage a high production run at a miniscule cost.
