Bill,

The reason that things open higher and then fade a lot of times is the market buy orders on the opening. If it's anything like stocks, a lot of people wait to see how they open and then react. The MM will open it as high as he reasonably can if there is no interference from the pesky public wanting the other side. When people see how high the price is they send in their sell orders, but oops the price has changed by the time they hit the floor. Same goes on the sell side..
