While I May Have Misinterpreted Your Tone...
Your point in beginning a post with a somewhat contentious statement might be?
This is dangerous territory. But, if I may speak for at least some of the group here, I don't think any of us labor under the delusion that these CONCEPTS are NEW. (Nor would I think you would labor under the delusion that observing that SEEK seems a little slower than others is anything but a bit of stale bread, as well.)
I don't think we need to worry TOO MUCH about SEEK just being a SEARCH ENGINE either... although, I sense another stale piece in here as well... SEARCH ENGINES AS COMMODITIES, etc... one of the more popular misconceptions and I think soon to be woven into every puff piece from those search engine companies whose underlying technology is a bit also-ran. An effective and powerful search engine capability will remain a premium offering for at least a while... certainly while whole flocks of newbies head on line and want to get around with ease. And as a capability and PRODUCT goes, it's still quite valuable... as witnessed by the surge (no other word for it) in SEEK's server product sales for inter, intra, extranets.
That said, "portal" and, now thanks Zona Research, "portalnomics" is the rant of the day. And SEEK, in what right now looks a lot like me-too-ism (which is what you see a lot of in emerging industries) is in the middle of all that. It's not ahead. It's not really behind. I'd say its in the deep middle. Awaiting new deals. And, I gather, more of an emphasis upon e-commerce. We, SEEK LONGs that is, have seen glimmers of Motro the deal-maker and negotiator (WBS and DT) and Motro the deal-killer (NSCP); both of which are positive developments, to my mind at least. But, we need more. Obviously.
Oh, well, if I've misread your tone, my apologies. I prize civility almost above all else.
Best Regards,
