Ed, my post was an attempt at satire. Besides, in reality, Ford is
one of many auto manufacturers -- they are not a monopoly. This is why they are allowed to bundle their products. Microsoft has 85% of the PC OS market, which makes them a monopoly and which means they have to play by different rules.
As far as breaking up Microsoft is concerned, what is different about them? Please explain why a software firm is different? If they were broken up, the applications division (Word, Excel, Access etc.,) would then have to compete fairly in the market with other application vendors. (I would still probably choose Office, because I happen to like it -- but I would rather have several vendors to choose from than only one).
PS As far as porting software, perhaps a standard,open,Java is the
answer.Oops,I forgot -- Microsoft is trying to Balkanize Java so that they can then make their version the standard. |
