I am staring at a sales brochure for MAGICOM 2000 by Copytele.

You have to see it to believe it. The eerie green screen reproduces well.

Magicom appears to be a telephone with a fax scanner and eerie green screen protected by >60 patents. It has a 2400 baud modem, parallel port, serial port, and Cellular interface. The screen is about twice the size of the new Newton with twice the resolution. It has digital ink, but no handwriting recognition. A touch sensitive keyboard can be displayed on the screen to produce "word processing functions". Memory will hold up to 80 pages of text, or 12 minutes of voice. Faxes can transmit at 10 pages per minute. Something inside runs hot enough to require a fan.

This looks like a product that should retail for under $100 (maybe $99) and be sold by infomercial. I think it will be a hit at most swap meets. The half billion dollar market cap sported by Copytele is hard to justify on the basis of this product. It might have been interesting 10 years ago. Now there are too many cheaper ways to accomplish the same benefits claimed for Magicom.

I don't get it. I would urge investors to get their very own copy of the brochure, and decide for themselves. Let the party begin.
