Indonesian stocks plunged over four percent on fears of more violence after students were killed by police in riots in Jakarta. The composite index was down 23.514 points or 5.46 percent at 407.012 at midday.
Top Indonesian economics minister Ginandjar Kartasasmita told Reuters Television on Wednesday that Jakarta must repsond somehow to the demands of student protestors, but declined to comment specifically on what should be done.
The Indonesian rupiah was also down following the students' death. At 0530 GMT, the rupiah was quoted around 9,750/9,900, compared with around 9,250 in late Tuesday in Jakarta before the news of the students' death.

Ginandjar says Indonesia must reply to protestors

TOKYO, May 13 (Reuters) - Indonesia's top economics minister, Ginandjar Kartasasmita, said on Wednesday that Jakarta must respond somehow to the demands of student protestors.
But Ginandjar, in an interview with Reuters Television at the end of a Tokyo visit, declined to comment on what the government should do to respond to the demonstrations, in which at least six people have been killed, saying it is beyond his jurisdiction.
''Definitely we have to respond to the situation,'' Ginandjar said. The response should include ''probably some more initiatives from the government, probably some more initiatives from parliament.'' |
