A turbodiesel is far more efficient than an electric car. The nice thing about a modern direct-injection turbodiesel is that it could be run off vegetable oil. When biofuel prices become competitive (probably thru a combination of crop engineering and a tiered carbon tax) the turbodiesel will be King of the Road. Sure, that pesky electric with the thousand-pound batt pack will trounce me at the stoplight, but I'll go from San Fran to Ely, NV without a fuel break. That's over some hilly terrain.
Until electric storage means a 200-pound five-passenger car has a 400-mile range in tough terrain - internal combustion has much to recommend it.
