ERM: Re: Client server migration ...

I agree that the Y2K problem provides an opportunity to migrate applications to client-server. No doubt about it. But, read the "fine print" ... they didn't know what they were getting into. That means it was quite a challenge, and provided some gotcha's that they weren't prepared to handle.

And, they were trialing the concept on an application. Migrating an entire site's portfolio is a HUGE undertaking. Not for the faint of heart. Mucho experience required.

Personally, I agree with the concept of spending dollars to get a "better" system, instead of just getting a Y2K compliant version of the existing system. However, totally retraining an entire flock of end users for your application(s) is not an easy task. Particularly when you combine it with having to rewrite all your operational procedures, and other myriad small details that it takes to change over.

Migration is exactly that ... it's a migration ... not a conversion. It takes many, many months/years, and is very painful. There has to be a very good ROI to make it worthwhile. It does, however, open up the possibilities of further expanded functionality in the future.

So many intangibles, so little time ...
