BT in œ800m internet expansion
By Michelle Green in London

British Telecommunications said on Wednesday it was planning an œ800m ($1.3bn)
network expansion programme to meet the expected increase in demand for data
communications and internet services.

The investment comes after the œ300m investment in switching equipment announced by
BT earlier this year.

BT said the two investments would enable the company's core network to meet
the demands of the emerging information market for increasingly sophisticated
internet and multimedia services It said the network would support new applications
such as electronic trading, mobile and broadband data integration and digital
broadcasting.

The company said it believed that the UK multimedia market would grow to become as
large as the market for telephone usage by 2003.

Since privatisation, BT had invested more than œ30bn in its network and has remained
ahead of its competition, it said.

Sir Peter Bonfield, chief executive, said: "With this latest investment we have all the
ingredients to continue to lead the data wave in the UK."

The œ800m will be used to extend the reach of BT's core optical fibre
transmission network and exploit emerging dense wave divisional multiplexing
technology. These technologies would allow BT to expand its core network
almost without limit. BT has the largest network of this kind in the UK and
Europe.>>>>
