The market is doing strange things because no one has a clue what's going on. Chip prices are deflating, and they've never done that, so no one knows what it means.

DRAM prices are already the worst they've ever been. If they "stabilize" at this level, some people *will* be driven out of the business, and none of my sources see the capacity bubble dissipating until 1999.

Increased capital spending overall means nothing to Intel. Their capital spending has been growing right along, downturn or not, because they're so darn huge that 20% of their sales is *still* $4.5 billion.

Very interesting analysis on all of this from IC Insights at this morning's SEMI New England meeting. Details to follow as soon as I get done writing them up.
