Walt, re: option expiration/exercise.

Can I wait until expiration or almost up to in order to cover. In other words, do I still have my shares until expiration, at which time they may or may not be called away?

Equity options are American-style, meaning they can be called away at any time during the contract life. You should anticipate to be called (or, conversely put) once time-value has fully decayed. This generally occurs at/near expiry, although deeply in-the-money options may also be candidates.

Whether and when you cover (or roll-up) depends on your motive for writing calls in the first place. Did you write to protect your DELL position, or for extra cash? [You wrote COVERED calls, right?]
