Speeds Up to 50 Times Faster Than Traditional Dial-Up Internet Access

Teleport Communications Group Inc. (TCG// NASDAQ: TCGI) and DualStar Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: DSTR) today announced the delivery of the first high-speed Internet access to New York City residents via Rate-adaptive Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Loop (RADSL) technology. This technology provides Internet access at speeds up to 50 times faster than the traditional dial-up.

TCG and DualStar are utilizing RADSL technology in order to provide telephone service and high-speed Internet services over a single pair of twisted copper wires up to a distance of 18,000 feet from TCG's digital network. TCG's RADSL system can be deployed in the common space location of an apartment building or campus facility to serve residents of one particular complex, or it can be co-located at TCG's network terminal in the Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC) central office for regional coverage. This trial has utilized the common space location within a residential building on Manhattan's West Side.

"The application of RADSL technology is not limited to unbundled local loops leased from the ILEC," said Bob Farzami, TCG's Director of Technology. "In fact, when deployed on the intrabuilding wiring within a single building it can operate at higher rates while further reducing TCG's operational expenses." Since November of 1997, TCG and DualStar have been conducting an RADSL trial in New York City with approximately 48 residential users enjoying high-speed access to graphics-intensive content on the World Wide Web.

"This service offering is cost-effective for high-speed, continuous access, with the addition of telephone service." added Rudy Tesser, TCG's Director of Emerging Markets. Local and long distance telephony services will be offered for additional charges over the same facility.

RADSL architecture is ideally deployed in residential complexes and multi-dwelling units (MDUs). RADSL equipment is placed in the basement of the residential building and then connected to the nearest TCG node, via TCG's fiber or broadband wireless links. High speed data and voice traffic is transported to appropriate class 5 telephone switches and Internet routers on TCG's backbone. Based on this architecture, data services can be provisioned to residential customers with rates up to 7 Mbps.

Richard DiBello, Director of Technology for DualStar said: "We have been a pioneer in the resale of high-speed residential Internet access and are pleased to be working with TCG, a leader in the field. The knowledge we have gained from our successful implementation of high-speed Internet access in newly constructed MDUs, and the operational use of RADSL technology, will allow DualStar to pursue the existing or retrofit MDU Market."

DualStar provides on-site technical assistance for the management of the DualStar-certified RADSL plant, and installs and activates all residential Internet services, in addition to reselling TCG's RADSL service.

TCG has other trials underway exploring all of the DSL family of products by utilizing unbundled copper loops provided by ILECs in different regions. Unfortunately, most ILECs have so far been unwilling or unable to provide TCG with the high quality "clean" loops that are necessary to support high speed Internet access over RADSL service.
