"My DEC PC used to boot up with a DEC Logo screen. It was easy to disable, which I did, and I now boot directly to Windows."

I would think the typical first screen would be the desktop with a bunch of software icon plus Windows' My Computer, My Briefcase etc...
Every morning after I flip the power on switch on my PC, I go thru the routine of getting a cup of coffee, straighten up my real desk top, by the time all the boot up stuff is done, my first screens (actually two) are one window with my favorite website number 1 on IE4, the second first screen window is my favorite website number 2 on Netscape4.05, then I check my email.....I don't even see the proposed first screen. I think most people will be using it that way, ie, firing up everything automatically with software like DUNCE.
Is this "first screen" issue also a non-event?
