<Nynex (now known as Bell Atlantic), was especially prepared to handle. "Nynex's attitude was 'You have to tell us what you want,'" says Carney. "But we didn't know exactly what we wanted. We were looking for them to add value, and they couldn't.">
<Based in Staten Island, Teleport Communications Group is one of the country's first and largest Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs). CLECs are a relatively new phenomenon in the world of telecommunications, offering an alternative to the total monopoly that the so-called "baby bells"have had on local voice and data services Back in 1994, Teleport began providing private line and other dedicated access services for the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. Today, the company boasts over 8,700 route-miles of fiber optics, as well as broadband wireless networking facilities. It operates in 57 major markets nationwide, with that number continuing to rise as it acquires additional local operations.
In February 1997, Teleport acquired Cerfnet, a tier 1 ISP with direct access to Internet network access points. The Cerfnet acquisition propelled Teleport into the Internet services business, including access, Web hosting, and colocation services. The company has also diversified into long distance, 800 number services, calling cards, pay telephones, and other telecommunications offerings.>
<Teleport had already won SIUH's local voice business in 1994. In addition to being significantly less expensive-on the order of 15 percent-than the incumbent local exchange carrier, Nynex, Teleport also held out the promise of being a more responsive vendor. "The people at the hospital were looking for a carrier that would respond faster to service requests and give them a faster mean time to repair," says Rob Westervelt, vice president of sales at Teleport New York>
