My local telephone company is Southern Bell. I have an extra line that I use for internet access (through AOL) and faxes. This extra line is charged the same rate as my regular local line. However it seams that somewhere in the northeast the phone company charges a little extra for phone lines that connect to the internet (regardless that it's a local call). Media One will be offering internet access through cable by the end of the year in my neighborhood.
On the Start subject, yes they will be a formidable competitor indeed. They've been piling up content for a long time now. The seek partnership with Microsoft browser came from their last quarterly report. Under the International Partners section.
