The image that comes to mind when reading this thread is of a couple of monkeys with sticks wandering around in a room full of caged cats. Every so often one of the monkeys pokes one of the cats. The cat hisses and claws ineffectually at the monkey. This reaction delights the monkey, who soon pokes the cat again. The cat never quite figures out that hissing and clawing only causes more poking.

Presumably this mutual entertainment will continue until either a load of bananas arrive for the monkeys (indicating the cats will starve), or a batch of tuna arrives for the cats. In the latter case, the cats dine well and the monkeys wander off in search of new targets to torment.
