Another tough, but excellent question. This thread has been great for me, because it really makes me think and challenge all of the beliefs that I have held. Thank You all.
It is hard to answer the example you used, because more background on the individual in question is needed. My first reaction is to say that the obsessed persons emotions are not really love based if he has the need to persecute others. It would appear that he is actually insecure and fearful in his beiefs if he is so threatened by others that he needs to attack them in order to bolster his own feelings for the choices he has made. This of course is a very large generalization, but it is also the easier answer for me:-)
Another thought could be that the person is unbalanced, and in need of care. that would raise an interesting question, Does a person who is not necessarily steeped in reality, have legitimate emotions and are those emotions based on false reality, pure? Another question is can we have emotions that are not wholly from the same base? By that I mean, can it be both love and fear based at the same time? I dont know the answer to that, but at first blush, I would guess yes.
As to your question of are love and fear the basis of all other emotions, I would say a resounding, I think so:-)
