Well, there is one big difference between Ford and MSFT. Ford doesn't own 90+% of the cars made in the world. Ford has a couple of guys named GM and Chrysler to worry about. MSFT, being a monopoly by any definition of the word, doesn't have that problem.

Lets say I have a new engine thats a lot better than the current ones, would be a big seller. I go to GM. If they turn me down I go to Ford or Chrysler. There is a good chance that I could sell it to them.

Now lets say Ford had 95% of the world market for cars. I go to them with this engine. They say no, they are perfectly happy with their current systems. Now where do I go? Yugo?

Of course, its been MSFT's policy in the past to say "well, we'll give it a try." Than they take it apart, make it so its just changed enough that it won't work with anyone else, than come out and say "MSFT Develops New Engine. However, it will not be compatible with anything anyone else has." And once again, because they have 95% of the market, what are you going to do.
