Can anyone on this thread do an 'objective' benchmark on Oracle 7 vs. Msft SQL Server?

I was discussing this subject with a local (i.e. European) expert over lunch and the person mentioned that it is, at best, a religious discussion....i.e. much depends on what you already believe to be the truth. I was told that if the OS System choice is Windows NT, the OBVIOUS choice is SQL Server, and not ORCL 7. If it happens to be an UNIX shop, then the inevitable choice is Oracle 7.

I wonder if anyone on this thread can cut through the 'sales pitch' and classify the 'total' difference...i.e. if you had a choice of both operating system as well as RDBMDS platform, what would you go for>

BTW, should people like Red Brick be even thought about in this thought process?

Many, many thanks for volunteering to be the 'oracle' on this tough subject.

Kind regards,

p.s. Please do not fear using all the latest buzzwords you need to, to get to the bottom of this subject!
