Hitachi Data Systems Announces New Generation of CMOS Enterprise Servers; New HDS Pilot Series P8 More Than Doubles Capacity and Offers Greatest Choice of Models
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1998--Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) today announced the HDS Pilot Series(TM) P8 models, a new generation of complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-based mainframe processors featuring equivalent performance, model for model, to the recently announced S/390 CMOS-only systems.
Targeted at Parallel Sysplex and standalone S/390 environments, the 18 P8 models include three high-end turbo models, the most in the industry. All base models are scheduled to be generally available in September, with the higher performance turbo models following in December.
"Along with these new Pilot models, as a part of Parallel Sysplex environments, Hitachi continues to enhance the HDS Skyline Series(TM), the world's S/390 performance leader," said Chris Worrall, vice president of Hitachi Data Systems' CMOS line of business. "The market acceptance of our Skyline Series(TM) underscores the importance of super-high-performance engines as an integral part of a complete family of enterprise server solutions."
"But in addition to performance, Hitachi Data Systems also recognizes that customers want -- and need -- centralized management of data, 7x24 accessibility, an assurance of business continuity under adverse circumstances, and the agility to meet any number of dynamic business requirements," said Worrall.
"I'm most proud of the fact that Hitachi Data Systems consistently delivers the performance, service, and support, and therefore the peace of mind, that customers demand. We are delighted to add even more performance and capacity options to what is already the broadest offering in the industry. I can also say that we are evaluating possible additional models that could further extend the capacity and granularity options."
In addition to the wide range of models announced today, Hitachi Data Systems also announced a number of significant new feature/functions aimed specifically at the Parallel Sysplex environment. These feature/functions, along with the inherent design of the Skyline and Pilot series, underscore Hitachi's total commitment to Parallel Sysplex as the path to the future.
Key Customer Benefits
Hitachi Data Systems' new P8 models boast a dramatically smaller footprint and ultra-fast I/O processors. Faster I/Os, combined with improved multi-processor (MP) ratios, provide greater capacity to process more work.
In addition, with the new Pilot P8 models, customers can take advantage of the following: -0- *T
-- Attractive total cost-of-ownership characteristics
-- A comprehensive set of Internet and electronic commerce-ready
features
-- The only vendor with extensive experience in the highest
performance and capacity category of S/390 complexes
-- Information Systems Management/Capacity Planning (ISM/CP(TM)) Service, a comprehensive capacity and performance planning
offering
-- Superior availability design characteristics
-- Full-function Parallel Sysplex support including ultra-high-speed
Inter-System Bus (ISB) connectivity
-- The industry's most robust dual-power implementation
-- World-renowned Hitachi quality and reliability
-0- Year 2000
This product does not have date dependencies and is therefore Year 2000 ready. Pilot is the only CMOS mainframe series to feature the HDS Run Time eXtensions (RTX) Environment, including HDS RTX Time Machine and HDS RTX Time Warp(TM). RTX, a patented hardware assist toolset, aids customers in identifying and correcting errors in the logic of date usage and acts as a "safety net" to give users time to find the best solution for their Year 2000 compliance issues.
Parallel Sysplex
Pilot is fully Parallel Sysplex capable, including Integrated Coupling Facility, and offers ultra high-speed ISB coupling, allowing communication with a Parallel Sysplex coupling facility at data rates more than three times that of current technology coupling links. This translates into the ability to perform more work requiring coupling facility control functions, and to remove data sharing bottlenecks.
Earlier this week Hitachi Data Systems announced four interrelated Parallel Sysplex services to support customer needs: Advisor Service, Strategy Development Service, Implementation Service, and QuickPlex Service (see 11 May press release).
Technical Features
Hitachi Data Systems' new P8s deliver the following features: -0-
-- Fully S/390 compatible
-- Supports OS/390, MVS/ESA, VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, and TPF (RPQ)
-- Fully Parallel Sysplex capable
-- Standby IPs on all models
-- Supports 15 LPARs
-- Cryptographic co-processor to support secure electronic commerce
transactions
-- 14 base-level general purpose models (1-way through 10-way), 3
high-end turbo models (8-way through 10-way) and one Coupling
Facility model
-- Architectural support of up to 32 GB processor storage
-- Hardware implementation of IEEE floating point arithmetic
-- Up to 16 ultra-high speed ISB coupling links (up to 333 MB/sec)
-- 256 ESCON(R) channels, 96 parallel channels, 32
HiPerLink-equivalent coupling links
-- Integrated Coupling Facility capability on all models including
both 10-way models
*T -0- In addition, Hitachi Data Systems announced its intent to provide both Fibre Channel connectivity (FICON(TM)-compatible) providing 100 MB/Sec full-duplex throughput and Internal Coupling (IC) channels on the Pilot Series P8's during 1999. Hitachi Data Systems also announced its intent for the Fibre Channel connectivity feature to be fully supported by the Hitachi Freedom 7700E, the industry's most reliable and highest performance storage system as well as other FICON(TM)-compatible devices as they become available.
ACE (Advanced CMOS ECL) Technology
Along with these new Pilot models, Hitachi also announced its commitment to continued enhancements to ACE technology -- the backbone of Skyline's performance. With enhanced ACE technology, Hitachi will continue to offer greater engine performance and high-end capacity S/390 solutions in Parallel Sysplex environments.
