Worswick,
No need to throw temper tantrums on this thread. You can criticize those with opposing viewing without being insulting. I know how to throw back choice words at you, but that is not going to help anything. Besides, I have a lot of respect for you based on your posts on this thread in the past.

Re:Clayton... did you answer my question? I'll repeat it. "..I wonder how many of the Indian originated "nationalists" here on this discussion group have ever spent any time let alone months and months like I have in Indian villages living on a village economy. Few. Pitifully few becasue they would see that the "new" India standing proud over the nuclear fires is something the country can't afford.

I grew up in Kerala during the 60's and 70's. Yes, I have seen village living and poverty in Kerala those days. I traveled some through interior parts of Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh and I have read a lot about the life in the thousands of villages in Northern India. I think Iam qualified to comment on that.

India has had extremely poor people living in primitive conditions for thousands of years. Some how they seem to survive. I don't think the world has enough money to throw at them to bring them upto to the Western standard of living. From watching them they don't seem to be more stressed than my affluent neighbours here in Plano, Texas. While I think it is noble goal to impove their lots, let's get realistic here. Iam in no way, shape or form defending the corrupt politicians who mismanaged India during the last 35 or so years. That is why some of us migrated to the US.

My take is on the reaction of the Indians on this thread is that, they feel the same way Americans felt when Ronald Reagan swept into office in 1980 and gave notice to the world that don't mess with us anymore, we won't be a sleeping giant any longer. Not to that extent, but similiar. Personally, I feel India needed an event like this bring some much needed solidarity among its warring(sp?) factions.

Re:Why do Indians always bring in the tiresome business of American deficiences to rationalize India's "moral superiority" over the US.

I don't think anyone in their right minds would consider India morally superior. The reason why comparision with US comes up is that US is in the fore-front of condemning India on this isssue. Look at some of the headlines, 'Clinton punishes India', as if they are quaking in their boots there in India that they are going to get spanked by the US. Besides, most of us on this thread lives in the US.

Re:Let me asky you a simple question since Independence has India become more socially stable or less socially stable?

The obvious answer is less stable. Does that imply that India should have remained under the Brit's rule. Or let me ask you this, Is Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union more stable or less stable since the break up?
