Federal and state regulators plan to launch one of the biggest
ever U.S. antitrust cases, accusing MICROSOFT CORP (Wednesday's
close: 86-15/16) of abusing its power and driving competitors from
the lucrative software market. Attorney General Janet Reno,
Assistant Attorney General Joel Klein and a few state attorneys
general from the 19 or more states involved plan to unveil their
case against Microsoft at a midday news conference, a source close
to the case said. The government will allege that Microsoft, like
other alleged monopolists before it, abused its power with the aim
of competing unfairly and driving rivals from the marketplace.
