Nonononooooh. I'm a back-seat passenger.
I don't think the new one beats the original in fuel economy. More efficient engine held back by a heavier vehicle and a higher base displacement (gasoline version).
The Beetle and the Golf share a common underbody. I'd expect the Golf to do as well in a collision.
