Gigabit Ethernet Distance Record

I am posting this press release from Bay Networks because it shows that Gigabit Ethernet is not subject to the distance limitation previously indicated.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1998--Two hundred and fifty
residents at a condominium complex in central Stockholm now each enjoy direct 100-Mbit
Internet access as the result of a creative technical partnership between Bay Networks, Inc.
and Telia.

The innovative project includes a 22-kilometer Gigabit Ethernet fiber optic link between Bay
Networks Accelar routing switches, which sets a Gigabit Ethernet distance record in addition
to being the first Local Area Network established in a residential building to provide 100Mbit
Internet connections.

"This is a revolutionary way of bringing the Internet to end users by employing a local area
network solution rather than relying on traditional dial-up telecommunications," explained Jan
Hornqvist, Managing Director at the Bay Networks office in Stockholm, which supplied the
Accelar routing switches for the project. "It illustrates that there is a high-speed, low-cost
solution available to build access networks in metropolitan environments."

The unique project was undertaken by Bay Networks and Telia, the leading supplier of
telecom-based information services in the Nordic/Baltic region.

"Bay Networks was technically and philosophically equipped to undertake this project
because their powerful switching and Layer 3 architecture made it possible to cope with
demanding applications as well as great distances," said Lasse Lindblad at Telia's S-Lab.
"The 22-kilometer link is not only technically interesting but it also dramatically reduces
costs."

The wiring of the Bofill's Arch condominium complex is one step in providing high-speed
Internet access to the Swedish metropolitan population. The complex was selected for the
first phase of the project due to the very active interest from the people in Bofill's Arch,
combined with a high penetration of personal computers. Individual users each have their
own 100 Mbps Ethernet port and will also be able to receive local content, gaming and other
applications over the state-of-the-art network.

This innovative Swedish Internet access solution was presented at the Bay Networks Service
Provider Executive Forum in Naples, Florida, on May 12-13.
