Couple of main points on the UP - SP rail problems ......one more time
-- the absolute mess created by the UP-SP merger was planned and prepared for for over a year. They knew what the problems would be and they spent time and resources to have a smooth transition ----- instead they created a disaster.
--- the timely delivery of coal to power plants by rail is an absolute critical function. No coal, no power. No power, .........
Most plants do not have room to store more than a short range supply of coal reserves. And, even to try and do so would create another whole set of logistical problems.
imho, We need to adopt the attitude that it will all fail until we can positively prove that it won't. Much better to make more of an effort now when we can do so from an intact infastructure, and do it in excess of the actual problem ...... than to try and play catch-up -- fix-up when the infastructure's gone *glitchy*.
>>> The point I am making, is there are quite a few innovative solutions. I like how a major problem brings out the creativeness in people. <<<
I know just what you mean. That's why I enjoyed the ending of Titanic so much. Here were all the Gloomy Gus's going around mopping and whining about the "The iceberg! The iceberg! The hole! The hole! The water! The water! We're sinking! We're sinking!"
And then, the clear headed problem solvers just stepped in and found a way to fix that nasty old hole, pump the water out, and still make it in to NY in near record time. That's why Titanic is such a great lesson for us to this day. It teaches us that no matter how foolish and short sighted some people can sometimes be, there's always time to count on good old fear inspried creativity to find a way to solve the problem, get the girl, and arrive safe in port lookin' good. |
