MPEG-2 Encoder Makers Eye Camcorders, Optical Disks

At least eight chip manufacturers will ship MPEG-2 video encoder ICs by the first quarter of 1999.

Recently there has been a succession of integrated circuits (IC) introduced which implement video encoding fully compliant with the Moving Picture Coding Experts Group phase 2 (MPEG-2) Main Profile at Main Level (MP@ML) standard (Table 1, Fig 1, Fig 2, Fig 3, Fig 4, Fig 5).

Three companies are sampling video encoder chips: C-Cube Microsystems, Inc of the US, and Digital Media Laboratories Corp (DML) and Toshiba Corp, both of Japan. The samples are aimed at business applications, primarily digital broadcast studio equipment and digital video disk (DVD) authoring systems.

NEC Corp, Sony Corp, Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, Ltd, all of Japan, will begin shipping chips for consumer electronics in 1998. Mitsubishi Electric Corp of Japan plans to ship an MPEG-2 video codec (coder/decoder) in 1999, also integrating an MPEG-2 audio codec.
