You are 100% correct, of course. My failure to remember that UTEK does have a mask writing tool may be an indicator of the uphill battle they face... The Lepton/Ultrabeam tool is a vector writer, while the ETEC tools are raster scanners. Both sides argue that their approach is faster, but there's so little market experience with the Ultrabeam system that it's hard to say for sure. All the photomask companies are likely to be making big capacity buys in the next few years, so even a small slice of the market could be quite profitable for UTEK.

And yes, UTEK does dominate the disk drive head market, though ASML (with the new Special Applications unit) and Nikon are both fighting for that niche, too. Not to mention all the laser and FIB non-lithographic head trimming tools out there. Since the thread was about wafers, I think I brain-locked on that market. Sigh...
