Flight International, Apr 29, GPS review

>>>

The US Federal Aviation Administration is to fund an assessment of the risk which is associated with using the global position system (GPS) as the sole means of navigation .
A special committee including representatives for the air transport and general aviation sectors will report back to the FAA by 1 October on whether a back up system is needed.

The assessment was requeested be the RTCA, the government/industry body responsible for advising on modernising the US airspace system partly in response to fears of a breakdwn in consensus between the general aviation and air transport communities over which ground-based aids should be retained as a back-up to GPS.

This would explain a drop in price as the market now figures that revenues from the SLS are still a while in coming, and that for the time being PN will have to rely on its other products. Pn traded at
.60 cents for a while, then went up to 1.50 before it really took off to the 6.00 level. These were the good days... Buy low and sit on dead money for a long time or wait and see what the developments will be...???

The same issue of Flight International (in the letters section ) has an interesting contribution from a reader based in the UK;
"Expensive improvements are needed (for the GPS) It is perhaps unreasonable to expect the US taxpayers to pay for them: so perhaps an international agency should be set up to provide a satellite positioning service"

The reader refers to the fact that for the moment, the quality of the signal, the right to degrade the signal in time of conflicts as well as future funding for its upkeep are all dependent on the US government as that it the GPS system aspires to be truly global, it needs more international support ... A daunting task with the amount of money involve...

Opinions welcome
