David - i respectfully disagree that the PC is king - the fact is that businesses would get rid of the PC in a moment if they had an alternateive and now there being offered one (The NC - a thin client connected to a vast network ) - to quote Larry Ellison - "this is the information age - not the PC age" - sun also believes this hence their tag line - the Network IS the computer. granted the PC is the old paradigm but the net and the NC is the new one. The facts are that home pc sales are stalled (30% in a higly technolgical society like the US) and its not going up 15 years after the invention of the PC. SUN is absloutely on the right track - the low cost vendors like Dell are coming out on top but basically there selling and upgrading the same pool of users. People are sick of this continuous upgrade cycle - someone who bought a loaded 486 several years ago cant run new software - is the avg. user going to spend $3,000 to play Quake? the sony playstation is only $199 and doesnt crash when you try to load new software. My point here is that things are changing fast and microsoft is doing all they can to hold on to what they have - the internet, Java, the NC - these are all things microsoft doesnt control - and hates cause it cant set the standard.
