<<Off topic: are you a creationist?>>

I would just say that I have a serious problem with the manner in which evolution has been handled by the scientific community. What goes for evolution today is far removed from what was being taught 50 years ago. 'Punctuated equilibrium' is getting to sound a lot more like creation as time goes on. Natural selection is a fact. White rabbits live longer in the snow than brown rabbits. That's observable. No one has seen a rabbit sprout wings or grow gills. Besides, a leg making the transition to a wing is a very bad leg before it is ever a good wing. This poor creature could never survive to pass these traits on.

I also have a serious problem with the moral ramifications of the theory. Every time a 9th grader gets his hands on an AK-47 and shoots up a schoolyard I am brought face to face with this question - 'If we are merely the product of chance then who can make an argument that in the long run the actions of this person matter one iota'. I know that sounds harsh but when we are all dead and gone and in effect have returned to our mud puddles it will not have mattered at all what happened while we were here. On the other hand, if we were the product of intelligent design then and only then does morality have an adequate foundation for effective influence on the individual and the culture.

My apologies to those totally disinterested in this type of thing.

Jim
