WSJ says Daimler board approves Chrysler pact

Chrysler Corp CShares issued 7344102881998-05-14 close $75Monday May 18 1998The Wall Street Journal reports in its Friday edition that the supervisory board of Daimler-Benz AG gave its unanimous approval to the company's planned $38-billion (U.S.) merger with Chrysler. Reporter Brandon Mitchener says the board also made tentative plans to include Chrysler workers in future talks with Daimler's powerful works council. It, however, stopped well short of promising equal footing for Chrysler workers or U.S. union officials in the new DaimlerChrysler AG decision making process. The company's management has agreed to include additional representatives of the American work force in preliminary discussions with worker representatives of the supervisory board of the new DaimlerChrysler, according to Daimler's work council in a circular to company employees. The letter says this de facto includes Daimler's American colleagues in the co-determination process. The letter makes no mention of plans to establish a global works council or make room for representatives of Chrysler's U.S. work force on the supervisory board of the new company.
