Tom, I agree the announcement only 2 days before earnings was not typical. But the HP execs made it clear that the main reason was simply to prevent more people from buying in on Thurs & Fri, only to get burned. I really believe that the reason they didn't do it prior to that was they didn't have a handle on the number. They don't make just PCs, so even if they knew that division was loosing money, they may have felt that the other 99+ divisions might help them meet the number. Even if they had their doubts, they couldn't very well just go public with "doubts". They wanted to wait until they had a handle on a pretty sure number. As an accountant, I can sympathize with their position.
