For share dividends they have to buy the shares to provide to whomever bought; for cash dividends, they have to provide the cash.

That's why I said cover on dividends. If they cover before the record date, then they don't have to deliver the dividends.

I say this again only as information. True squeezes are very rare. These people that short naked ain't amateurs. In fact, I have been told, that some of them actually short into the "squeeze" because they are so ballsy they know it will pull back after the nellies start selling.

Before you find this odd, though, consider this: Longs average down when the price falls, so it shouldn't be strange for shorts to average up as the price rises. For every DGIV, there's a bunch of BAAT, NETZ,CSMA, and others that do come right on back.
