Total foreign investment in Russia

Foreign investment in Russia totaled $10.498013 billion in 1997, up 61% from $6.5061 billion in 1996, the State Statistics Committee told Interfax. By January 1, 1998 the stock of foreign investment in Russia amounted to $21.8 billion, the committee said.

Direct investment, such as contributions to charter capital and credits from foreign co-owners of companies, totaled $3.8973 billion (37.1% of all investment), up from $2.09 billion in 1996. Portfolio investments reached $342.8 million (3.3% of the total), compared to $45.4 million in 1996, and other investments, such as trade credits and bank deposits, amounted to $6.2579 billion (59.6%), up from $4.3707 billion.

Russian industry received $3.3373 billion in investment in 1997, of which $1.0091 billion in direct investment, including $447.6 million in the food industry and $294.9 million in the fuel industry. More than $4.416 billion in foreign investment went into finance, lending, insurance and pension security.
