Terrence, I am well aware that we fought against repression during World War II. Where you and I disagree is whether companies are responsible for the behavior of their employees while on duty. You apparently argue that they are not, but I am not sure the facts support your argument. For example, there was a recent sex discrimination in the workplace case where the company was not even aware of the problem, but I believe a judge decided that they should have been, reasonably. Certainly, once Denny's management was aware that there was racial discrimination going on, they had responsibility, in a legal sense.
Certainly it is generally recognized that employees are obligated to follow the law of the land, and the civil rights act is just that. You seem to envision a workplace where everyone does their own thing, breaking the law willy nilly if they feel like it, and being responsible for their offenses only as individuals. That place is not America!! And while it is great fun to be libertarian and shock everyone with far-ranging freedoms, certainly America would be a less civilized place if blatant and repeated racial discrimination were the law of the land. This is one of the places libertarian ideals really go off the rails for me, and become anarchistic.
People who are discriminated against are repressed, period. I think you may have something backwards!!! |
